ASKI is a microfinance institution based in Cabanatuan City. It operates mainly in Central Luzon with some branches in Regions 1 and 2. The communities served by all of its twenty branches were badly hit by typhoon Pepeng. This translates to almost 6,000 members whose homes, properties and livelihood were ravaged by the storm. ASKI needs P55 million worth of fresh funds for the rehabilitation of its members. The capital you give will be offered to its members as new loans so they can start rebuilding their businesses and get back on their feet again.

One of ASKI’s members is Aileen from Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Aileen availed of loans from ASKI to start a piggery business. However, the floods caused all twenty of her pigs to drown. Her assistant in the business also died during the storm due to a heart attack. Aileen has been deeply traumatized by the experience and often finds herself depressed and staring blankly into space. She intends to get a calamity loan in order to start a new business and a new life at that.

Nueva Segovia Consortium of Cooperatives – Typhoon Rehabilitation

Location: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet
Business: Provides microfinance and social development services to poor men and women and their families
Loan amount: P500,000 per branch (for about 40 clients)
Loan purpose: Additional loan to start-up business

NSCC is based in Vigan City with 8 branches spread throughout the Ilocos Region, La Union and Baguio City. It has branches in Bauang (La Union), Cabugao, Caoayan, Vigan, Cervantes (Ilocos Sur), Batac, Laoag (Ilocos Norte), and Baguio– all badly affected by Typhoon Pepeng. Damages to houses and livelihood properties were caused by flooding and landslides. In more than one case, an NSCC member or a relative was a reported casualty. Majority of the affected enterprises are in the agriculture, livestock or fishing industry. At least 1,873 members were affected and more than P20 million worth of fresh funds are needed for rehabilitation. The capital you give will be used as new loans for typhoon-affected members. This will help them to start their business anew and to get their life back to normal.

Katilingabanong Pamahandi sa Mindanao Foundation Inc. (KPMFI)

Location: Misamis Oriental
Business: Backyard Broiler Production
Loan amount: P30,000 per household

KPMFI is involved in the transformation of agri-based poor into microentrepreneurs. The Backyard Broiler Production Project enables rural families to raise between 1,000 to 2,000 heads in their backyard utilizing poultry houses of 100 sq. meters in size. The project in in partnership with a popular lechon manok outlet that assures the farmers of a ready buyer. There are now 300 families engaged in the project earning additional revenues of 100% of their former income. The capital you give will be used to provide microenterprise loans for KPMFI’s members so they can expand their poultry business. Members are spread throughout Gingoog City, Magsaysay and Claveria.

Association of Negros Producers (ANP)

Location: Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental
Business: Provides credit, marketing, training and consultancy services to micro-small-scale enterprises
Loan amount: P150,000 per entrepreneur
Loan purpose: Enterprise Loans

ANP is a Business Service Organization (BSO), geared towards business development of micro-small and medium enterprises advocating poverty alleviation through entrepreneurships. It was organized in 1988 as a result of the need to diversify the province’s economy, which heavily depended on the sugar industry. The organization worked with the wives of farm workers to provide them with skills in starting a kitchen or backyard business. Today, ANP has 85 members with products in the furniture and furnishings, gifts and housewares, fashion and food categories. Among its members is a multi-purpose cooperative that provides livelihood to housewives, out of school youth and the unemployed. It has trained them to produce world class creative native cutlery organizers, serving trays, plate organizers, place mats, coasters, table napkin rings, picture frames and framed paintings. The capital you contribute will be used to provide enterprise loans, to ANP’s members such as the above-mentioned to support the growth of their businesses.

Hagdan sa Pag-Uswag Foundation, Inc. (HSPFI) – Chicharon

Location: Misamis Oriental
Business: Provides microfinance and social development services to poor men and women and their families
Loan amount: P150,000
Loan purpose: Microenterprise Loan

HSPFI has been involved in microfinance operations for more than 20 years now. One of its members is Lioter Cuer from Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City. Lioter has been in the business of making and selling chicharon (crispy fried pork rind) for 3 years now. Branded as “Rotits Yummy Pork Chicharon,” regular customers are VJandep Bakeshop, Pan de Pugon, Isuzu Cars Canteen, and Steeves Restaurant. Aside from the chicharon, he also earns additional income from selling the oil and firewood used to cook chicharon. The income from his businesses is used by Lioter to send his two children to college. Lioter hopes to access more funds to finance his business in order to meet the demands of his current customers and to capture other markets.

Location: Misamis Oriental

HSPFI has been involved in microfinance operations for more than 20 years now. One of the communities it serves is in Lagonglong, a 5th class municipality in the province. One of HSPFI’s clients in the area is Rex Ryan Adalim, 27 years old. He is involved in the production of bamboo mats which he sells to tourists and members of the local community. He has been involved in the business for more than 5 years now, which is able to provide for his daily living expenses. The additional capital you contribute will be used to provide microenterprise loans to Rex Ryan and other members of the community.

Galimuyod Savings and Development Cooperative (Galimuyod SDC) – rice wine

Location: Ilocos Sur

Galimuyod SDC services more than 4,000 members spread throughout the province of Ilocos Sur. One of its areas is the municipality of San Emilio, situated in the mountainous hinterlands. The people here belong to the community of indigenous people majority of whom are engaged in farming activities. A number of them are engaged in the production of native rice wine as their means of livelihood. The capital you contribute will be used to provide enterprise loans for the production of rice wine. Galimuyod SDC is working with the community to address issues concerning product development, packaging and marketing.

HSPFI has been involved in microfinance operations for more than 20 years now. One of its members is Luisita Omaran from the third class municipality of Jasaan. Luisita has established a family business involving the production of furniture and fixtures such as tables, chairs, cabinets and dividers. Operating for more than 10 years now, this earnings from this business helped Luisita build their house and send their 8 children to school. In addition, part of the income was reinvested into the business to purchase needed equipment. The additional capital you contribute will be used as an enterprise loan for Luisita to be used as working capital and to acquire additional equipment in order to meet demands of her customers.

HSPFI has been involved in microfinance operations for more than 20 years now. One of the centers of HSPFI is in the village of Lumbia, Southern part of Cagayan de Oro City. Most of the center members in this village are involved in Cashew nuts production. In fact, the centers are suppliers of cashew nuts orders of some prominent food companies of Cagayan de Oro like Slers, Vjandep and popular super malls in the city. They are also working to ensure that their products meet the export quality standards. Funds are needed for working capital and to purchase equipment to process typical Cashew nuts produced by the residents of Lumbia.

San Vicente I Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SVI-MPC)

Location: Negros Occidental
Business: Sugarcane farming, mango production, micro-lending crop support production, carabao dispersal, swine fattening, bamboo handicraft
Loan amount: P500,000
Loan purpose: Working capital

SVI-MPC has 72 active members who are land reform beneficiaries. It is currently in the process of constructing a muscovado plant to be used by its members. The capital you contribute will be used to buy the muscovado production of its members. By selling their produce to the cooperative, farmers will earn more income than they would if they sold to local traders.
